Happy Coincidences (A Poem)

By Joyce Jacobo

[Author’s Note: Based on a recent experience. Have you ever had those incidences where it felt like something was waiting just for you, or the universe had decided to do something nice for you?]

We went to buy a new dryer

because the last one had turned a cloth

wedged in its cockeyed barrel

into ash

and stained the rest of the laundry

with a smoky stench.

Our family

was on a budget.

Much tighter nowadays.

“We have one in the back”

the elderly assistant in a vest mentioned

“returned by someone who ordered

an electric dryer by mistake rather than gas”

It was at a perfect price

as if designed

just for us.

Like an early

holiday present.
