By Joyce Jacobo
[Author’s Note: Has anyone read Ray Bradbury’s story, The Halloween Tree, or seen the animated film adaptation of it with Leonard Nimoy? I would definitely recommend it, especially the special, since the focus is on how Halloween as a holiday has developed over the centuries.]
Have you seen
the Halloween Tree
where pumpkins hang
in place of leaves
Each one carved
with a different face
to represent
a soul displaced
Which flickers
inside a new frame
as a radiant
candleflame?
Every year they accumulate
on the tree
until their caretaker
sets them all free
The Grim Reaper
to guide everyone
far into
distant realms beyond
Interesting 🙂

I think it might have even been uploaded for free online through YouTube or such. It’s a classic. ^_^

Yes! I’m actually listening now (well, to Bradbury’s version, then will watch the special sometime before Halloween).

What a cool metaphor for souls awaiting judgment day. I don’t think I’ve read or watched either one.

Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend either watching or reading The Halloween Tree; each version focuses on exploring aspects of Halloween and its history. And now I kind of want to either find or perhaps create a decorative tree in a similar style for the spooky season. ^_^
