Ekphrasis of A Poem

By Joyce Jacobo

[Author’s Note: Ekphrasis, or basically describing the visual aspects of various mediums for artistic effect, offers a much of different possibilities. I once read an Ekphrasis of the Adventures of Rin Tin Tin comic, and it was incredible. So I wanted to do something similar…. with poetry.]

Inked letters stretch across a blank expanse

formed into words separated by spaces

when read together form complete ideas

    sometimes abstract

    but concrete enough

to create images in the mind

    for aesthetic pleasure

           or profound contemplation

… or so their writer hopes

  1. An ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the “action” of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning.
I am definitely an ekphrastic poet..visual imagery and music are my main sources for inspiration..as I try to describe this art in words. I loved your thoughts on it Joyce
