Keepsake (A Poem)

By Joyce Jacobo

[Author’s Note: I’ve received and bought a few lockets over the years, and each one of them holds precious memories (and often photos). Do any of you wear lockets?]

I wanted . . .

  to hold onto

       your memory

          and keep it close

                      to my soul

                                              so I sought out

                                          a small vessel

                             connected by a single

                        piece

                         of

                      string

                to lay upon my heart

       A simple material possession

           where I could have

                  a piece of you

                         forever
