Rainbow Patch (A Poem)

By Joyce Jacobo

[Author’s Note: Wonders are everywhere.]

After a long                                      and fretful night

where even dreams were afraid to come

            dawn pours past the curtains

at just the right angle through the window

to create a rectangle of bright colors

upon the wall opposite my bed

like a single patch in a much larger quilt

                  created on a natural prism

offered to chase away the shadows

                               that lingered

              . . . a good omen

                            for a week defined

                                     by concerns

                           . . . or a random coincidence

                                         unexpected

                                                     but pleasant

                                                   . . . or perhaps

                                                                (and even better)

                                                                           both
